Self tape

Record your self-tape with a scene reader running on the same device. The ActOnCue mobile app combines the teleprompter, voice reader, and camera so you can rehearse, record, and review all in one place.

Before you start:

What you need

To record a self-tape directly within ActOnCue, you'll need the iOS app. The mobile app has a built-in camera that records video while your scene partner reads opposite you, all on the same device.

Download Selftape Reader on iOS.

On the web version, the app doesn't include in-app recording. You can still use it as a teleprompter and reader while filming with a separate camera or phone.

Recording with the mobile app

1. Set up your scene

Make sure your script is loaded, your character is assigned, and voices are set up. If you need help with any of this, see Load your script and the Rehearse guide.

2. Enter self-tape mode

Open the rehearsal settings and enable the camera. Position your phone so it captures you in frame. The teleprompter and reader continue to work as normal while the camera records.

3. Record your take

Tap record and perform your scene. Your scene partner will speak their lines and wait for yours, just like in a regular rehearsal. The teleprompter scrolls along in real time so you can stay focused on your performance.

4. Review and re-record

Watch your take back immediately. If you want to try a different read, record again. Each take is saved so you can compare them later and pick your best performance.

Tips for a better self-tape

  • Rehearse first - Run the scene a few times before hitting record. Use line learning modes to get off-book
  • Check your framing - Make sure you're well-lit and centred before recording
  • Use Consistent voices for your reader if you need predictable timing across multiple takes. See Voices
  • Adjust pauses in the settings if you need more breathing room between lines

What's next?

  • Voices - fine-tune how your reader sounds
